- 1 Pressure cooker (for overnight chilling)
- 1 Small saucepan
- 1 Spatula or spoon (for stirring and spreading the topping)
- 1 Measuring cups and spoons
- 1 Oven (for baking)
- 1 Cooling rack (optional, for letting it cool slightly before serving)
Ingredients
- 1 loaf loaf French bread cut into 1-inch slices
- 6 large eggs
- 2 cups heavy cream
- ½ cup whole milk
- ¼ teaspoon salt
- ¼ cup unsalted butter melted
- ½ cup packed light brown sugar
- 1 tbsp corn syrup
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
Instructions
Prep the Baking Dish:
- Grease a 9x13-inch baking dish with butter or non-stick spray.
Arrange the Bread:
- Slice the French bread into 1-inch slices and arrange them in a single layer in the greased baking dish.
Make the Custard Mixture:
- In a large mixing bowl, whisk together:
- 6 large eggs
- 2 cups heavy cream
- 1/2 cup whole milk
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar
- 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
Soak the Bread:
- Pour the egg mixture evenly over the bread slices. Make sure all pieces are well-coated. Cover the dish with plastic wrap and refrigerate overnight (or at least 4 hours).
Preheat the Oven:
- The next morning, preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
Prepare the Brown Sugar Topping:
- In a small saucepan, combine:
- 1/4 cup unsalted butter (melted)
- 1/2 cup packed light brown sugar
- 1 tablespoon corn syrup
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly, until the mixture is smooth and the sugar is dissolved.
Top the Bread:
- Pour the brown sugar mixture evenly over the soaked bread slices. Spread it out with a spatula or spoon to cover the bread.
Brûlée the Top:
- Sprinkle additional granulated sugar over the top of the bread slices to create a brûlée topping.
Bake the French Toast:
- Bake in the preheated oven for 35-40 minutes, or until the French toast is golden brown and set in the center.
Cool & Serve:
- Remove from the oven and let the French toast cool for a few minutes. Serve warm and enjoy!
Notes
Bread Choice: Use day-old French bread or brioche for the best texture. Stale bread absorbs the custard without becoming too mushy.
Serving Suggestions: Pair with fresh berries, whipped cream, or maple syrup for extra decadence! 🍓🍯
