Enjoying Parks in Ogden
Ogden City Parks—and Recreation
By feature writer Darren Nelson for My Local Utah
Getting outside and enjoying public parks and spaces in Ogden during the summertime offers a wealth of benefits for both your mind and body. Surrounded by stunning mountain views and an abundance of green spaces, Ogden’s parks provide the perfect setting for exercise, relaxation, and community connection. Whether hiking the scenic trails, attending lively outdoor events, or simply unwinding in a peaceful garden, spending time outside helps reduce stress, boost mood, and promote physical health. The warm summer weather encourages residents and visitors alike to embrace an active lifestyle, explore the area’s natural beauty, and create lasting memories with family and friends.
Parks. Recreation. NOT Parks and Recreation
Every city organizes its departments differently, and in Ogden City, Parks and Recreation are managed as two separate departments.
The Parks Department is responsible for maintaining parks, restrooms, playgrounds, pavilions, tennis courts, and pickleball courts. They also manage the reservation process for park pavilions.
The Recreation Department is responsible for the maintenance and reservation of ball fields, the Marshall White Recreation Center, the Golden Hours Senior Center, and the Lorin Farr Pool. Recreation staff also manage registrations and coaching for organized adult and youth programs, sports, and classes.
Ogden City Parks
Ogden City has proudly earned the Tree City USA Award for more than 30 years — and it’s easy to see why! The city boasts over 40 public parks and 18 reservable pavilions nestled beneath a beautiful, thriving treescape, providing ideal settings for family reunions, weddings, company gatherings, and other special events. All city parks open one hour before sunrise and close one hour after sunset, giving visitors plenty of time to enjoy these scenic spaces.
Ogden’s parks offer a wide range of beauty and recreational opportunities for visitors of all ages. Amenities include a dedicated dog park, where owners are required to keep pets on a leash and clean up after them, as well as over 200 acres of irrigated turf, natural areas, vibrant flower beds, and lush gardens. Sports enthusiasts can enjoy baseball and soccer fields, basketball, tennis, and pickleball courts, along with walking, rollerblading, and bicycle paths, a skateboard facility, and a nine-station fitness course. Additional attractions include swimming pools, a kayak park, fishing streams and ponds, outdoor rodeo grounds, amphitheaters, playgrounds, sledding and tubing hills, water features, and concession stands—offering something for everyone year-round.
To hold an event at a specific Ogden City park location, such as a pavilion or gazebo, a reservation is most likely required; however, it does not guarantee exclusive use of the entire park. Access for other park visitors must remain open and unobstructed at all times. Pavilion reservation fees range from $50 to $100, depending on size and location. Events expecting more than 200 attendees, open to the public, or requiring additional City services must also submit a Special Event Application. These pavilions make for a shady respite on a warm day for large groups and families.
Ogden City Recreation
We offer a wide range of youth and adult recreation programs, classes, and year-round events. With two public pools, a recreation center, a senior activity center, a sports complex, and numerous sports fields and courts, there’s something for everyone to enjoy. With so many options available, boredom is never an option!
The Ogden Recreation Department operates two offices: the Community Services Building at 1875 Monroe Blvd and the Marshall White Recreation Center at 222 28th Street. You can register for youth and adult sports programs in person at the Monroe Blvd office or conveniently online. For classes and activities held at the new Marshall White Center, registration is available both online and onsite at the center.
Ogden City Recreation is always seeking dedicated community members to volunteer as coaches for youth programs, including T-ball, baseball, softball, flag football, soccer, and basketball. Volunteer coaches are the heart of our programs and play a vital role in their success. To become a coach, applicants must be at least 18 years old, complete the application process, and pass a background check. Training and support will be provided to ensure every coach feels confident and prepared.
Ogden Recreation offers indoor soccer exclusively for children ages 3 to 5, while outdoor soccer opportunities for older age groups are available through various organizations throughout the city. To register, simply navigate to the desired sport or program through the Ogden’s website’s menu, where you’ll be directed to our online registration manager. From there, you can create a new account or sign in to an existing one to complete your registration.
With the warmer months upon us, it’s the perfect time to get outside and enjoy everything our friendly city has to offer!
